Palazzo Rollo

A historic home overlooking the Duomo a few steps from the center of Lecce

Historic Residence B&B in Lecce

The B&B Palazzo Rollo is located in the historic center of Lecce, scenically overlooking the suggestive bell tower of the Duomo.

The structure has undergone a restoration work that has allowed us to recover the ancient beauty and all the original charm of the building, respecting a unique space of great atmosphere.

The Palace is characterized by the luxuriant American vine that surrounds the inner courtyard and the magnificent terrace, from which guests can admire, and almost "touch", the monuments of the city. The terrace is adorned with plants and flowers typical of our land, which have made it a veritable hanging garden, an ideal place to spend summer evenings outdoors. From the beginning of spring, the aperitif is served, every day, at sunset. The large inner courtyard is available to guests for parking cars.

Palazzo Rollo is today the property of the Andretta family who bought it from the Lopez Y Rojo family in the nineteenth century, while granting the second floor to the Theatines who made it an elegant dormitory, connected to the convent through a secret door.

It is not the only refuge that the splendid palace offered to the religious. A past renovation, in fact, has brought to light an underground road, an escape route for bishops to the hard times of the invasions.

The ground floor and a good portion of the first floor are, instead, for almost thirteen years, used as an accommodation facility that, thanks to the central position of the building, impresses tourists and guests also for the now famous, here in Lecce, waterfall of lives American that covers the entire interior facade of the Palace. The luxuriant creeper, which many have believed centenary, was "imported" by Mrs. Adriana, only twenty years ago, from the terrace of a friend of his in the Capital, when he stole a seed perhaps already imagining the precious green blanket.

A green that is even more beautiful, assures the lady, when in autumn she retires and leaves room for red, orange, yellow and brown giving an iridescent look to the entire building. A small but resistant intruder in the American vine, it is also a grape pergola that starts from the bottom and goes up all three floors of the building, giving the terrace sweet shoots. And it is not only on the thick blanket of greenery that the lucky tenants of Palazzo Rollo face.

The most external environments offer a unique view of the course. Opening the windows we find ourselves face to face with a curious gully that blows the water away and with St. Irene supporting the city, encased in the wall at a height where only the angels, saints and bishops who walk on the walls of bishopric succeed in greeting.

The windows are closed and the discovery continues inside the building of which one wing is still occupied by Mrs. Adriana and her daughter Elena. Among the barrel vaults, the cross vaults and the tapestry that once covered everything, you are immersed in a real atmosphere of other times.

Thanks to the "dismantling" of the building, that is to say the elimination of the tapestry, a true and proper sketch of the author came out, the proofs of color and design that Geremia Re sketched on the walls before frescoing a blue dreamy the vault of present Scirocco Room, embellished with a very fine golden lattice, the pride of the residence. Still in the same room, there is an ancient inscription, symbol of San Bernardino, acquired later by the Jesuits.

These are just some of the hidden wonders of Palazzo Rollo which, however, reserves its finest treasure for the upper floors. The privilege of a few and a sweet discovery for guests is in fact the breathtaking terrace that opens after a narrow internal flight of stairs, giving the eye a Lecce that very few can say they have known. An expanse of antennas, chimneys of all kinds, Lecce stone and large verandas and, in the middle, the bell tower of the Duomo that rises unexpectedly from the chianche of the vast terrace. And if by day the clean sky enchants the eyes nailing them to the horizon, it is above all in the evening that the clearing gives a fascinating spectacle with the suggestive rosary of churches, distinguishable one by one, points of steady and sure light between the immense urban landscape .
