Ice coffee with almond milk

The summer drink that gives energy and freshness in addition to taste.

Coffee in Salento is drunk on ice, and strictly with almond milk instead of sugar. At breakfast, after lunch or even in the evening, it sometimes even replaces the aperitif. It is fundamental that it is almost frozen and very sweet, so that on hot days you can take a regenerating break.

Simplicity and sweetness: there is all the essence of this wonderful land between two seas in the cult drink of the Salento summer. But one is not satisfied with just any one: it must be prepared as tradition requires and to really enjoy it one must choose the right places.
The history of coffee on ice
It is said that the origin of cold coffee is Spanish and the oldest recipe is found at the Cafè del tiempo, a historic bar in Valencia. Even today in the bars of the Iberian city you can enjoy coffee on ice, served here with a slice of lemon.
It is said that the Salento has imported from Spain the custom of ice in coffee. It was Otranto, at the beginning of the nineteenth century, the first city in Italy to serve coffee with pieces of ice and a peel of green lemon or mint leaves.

Antonio Quarta and the creation of the Lecce coffee

The true story of coffee in ice with almond milk, also known as Lecce-style coffee, began in the 50 years from Don Antonio Quarta's dream of opening a coffee shop in the center of Lecce.
Antonio Quarta was the only one who distributed ice in Lecce, because at the time nobody had a refrigerator in the house.
The people of the city then went to his bar to pick the ice and that's how Antonio got the idea of combining ice pickled with coffee.
In this way, the Lecce-style ice coffee is born, which replaces sugar with almond milk.
Antonio had created a drink that had the purpose of performing two functions: toning and attenuating the thirst of the hot summers of Salento.
Even today the Avio bar of the Quarta family is the reference point for all those who wish to enjoy one of the best ice-cream cafés in the city.
